1.0 out of 5 stars Poorly designed USB cable, March 15, 2011
By
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: WD Elements SE 1 TB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive (Personal Computers)
Warning: as mentioned by a few other reviewers, the USB cable design on this unit is too easy to come loose, thereby impacting file backups. I've purchased dozens of external USB drives from Amazon over the past several years, from many different manufacturers. Some have been slightly better or worse than others. Out of all of these, this has been the first that has been too-bad-to-use. Stay away from this design until they fix the usb connector!

Mine just came in and the connector seems to "sink in" when I plug the cable, is that what you mean by bad design? It certainly doesn't seem sturdy...like it's going to sink in completely at some point!

I've had two of these drives for about a year, and haven't had any issues with the USB connection.

Mine was not loose - but the USB connection is cheap and flimsy. It bent in my briefcase, now drive won't start up again. Won't connect, even with a new cable.

Have you tried a USB extention to the one provided? Plus, I just go to the local home improvement place and purchase a couple of brackets to hold it under the desk. I believe we can't all depend on the manufacturers for everything. The durability of the drive and the company that makes it should be the top priority in this purchase.

What about the drive itself? Find a way to keep the USB steady by using small brackets from a home improvement store. I feel one star is too low a score based on a cable, and not on the drive itself. Right?

It appears that the USB connector is upside down. I had a hard time learning how to insert the USB cable but once I learned it, it was all working fine. My drive is about a year old now and all is OK with it.
