Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: JLab Audio JBuds J5M Metal Earbuds Style Headphones w/ Mic, GUARANTEED FOR LIFE - Black Pearl (Electronics)
Out of the package these look a lot like the j3s but in a great new package. It's like a foil bag that you just rip open. The 45 degree angle plug isn't quite as good as a 90 but it's an improvement. The stress pints on the cable are beefed up compared to the j3s but not as bulky as the j4s. The wire is plenty long and seems very delicate and its rubbery feeling instead of slick like the j3s. Most of my jbuds last 3 -6 months so we'll wait and see. The mic is in a great place, it's closer to the y in the cable and just feels better using the control functions. They changed their warranty and it sucks now. If you're looking for the best warranty it's skullcandy HANDS DOWN!
These are SUPER comfortable, hardly notice them in my ear. The tips are soft. They feel light in your ears...no tugging or fatigue. I really like the grill on the back. Gives them a good look in your ears. Also great for sleeping because they don't stick out too far.
As for the sound its very good. Very warm sound and crisp highs. Didn't notice any mixing of the mids and bass like the j3s but I haven't been using these long. So far seems very balanced and clear.
If these had a lifetime warranty like skullcandy these would be 5 stars.
Update 12-8-11 After a good 40 hour burn in the sound is quite stunning. They claim 23khz as the high end and you can tell. The highs are very crisp. The separation of the highs, mids, and bass are quite amazing for buds in this price range. They honestly sound as good as my klipsch image s4s. Def a good buy
Update 1-15-12 I've had these less than 2 months and the left earbud tube literally separated from the housing. I have kept these in a samba case at all times and only use them at home. In other words they were well taken care of. The buds still function but when I pull them out of my ears the left one separates. I am going to try their warranty process but my expectations are low. I've had bad experiences with jlab in the recent past. I've heard from friends and here in the reviews that they often reject your return saying nothing is wrong. Guess we'll see. I'll update when I get through the warranty process. Gotta drop the rating a star for durability. If they mess with me on the warranty it'll drop another. I uploaded 2 photos so you could see what happened
Update 1-28-12 Went thru the warranty process and received my replacements fairly quickly. It cost $4 to ship in the defects. Only thing that would have made it better was if they'd have let me pick a diff color like skullcandy does.
Update 7-9-12 Thought it was worth noting the control functions do not work with my android device running 2.2(froyo). They do work with my device running 2.3(gingerbread). So I assume if you're running 2.3 or later you'll be good.

Can you please tell us what the new warranty is? I've noticed that on the website, you cannot register J5Ms or J6s. Does this mean that the warranty doesn't apply to those items, or has the warranty system changed for all products?

I'm not really sure about registering the j5ms. I haven't been able to either. In my personal experience jlab has taken care of me until recently. They have now made it so frustrating that I just buy their products as is. They used to care about their customers. If you look at some of my other reviews of the j3 and j2 they have deleted all their comments so they are no longer disputing the fact that they now suck LOL
But in a nutshell so to speak this is the warranty issue. They now want me to ship back their defective headphones and they don't even offer you a page to print their address. they want you to insure the package too. Skullcandys warranty process is almost the same except you don't have to have registered your product and they provide you a label to print and tape on the front of the box or whatever. Plus its lifetime. Even if my dumb@ss dunks my buds in water they will give me 50% toward another set. Warranty is the most important thing to me when buying iems or heaphones. They all fail if you use them. Even jlabs supposedly indestructible j4s don't usually make it the year.

Brian, JLab did not delete their comments, Amazon did. Amazon says they commented too much, even though they were just informing their customers of their warranty. It's still easy, you register when you get the product, and you're done. If something happens, it's a simple process on their site, and is a much quicker turnaround then the old school e-mail way. Send them an e-mail, they're still just as helpful.

ya but you can not register the j5ms. I've sent 3 emails with no answer. Actions speak louder than words to me.Jlabs warranty is for a year,Klipsch and sennheiser are 2 yrs and skullcandy is lifetime. I used to just email jlab my proof of purchase then viola earbuds were on the way. All I'm saying is if you have to go through a process and both those processes are similar then why on god's green earth would you choose a year warranty over lifetime? ALL earbuds fail but skullcandys got your back for life or klipsch and sennhieser got ya for 2 years. It's just a no brainer for me

Thank you Page, I did. They also did finally contact me and told me theyd been real busy with all the new lines you're pumping out which is understandable. I still stand behind my review. For the record skullcandy's replacements come with a lifetime warranty. For people who are real active or hard on their headphones thats the way to go.

G. Chandler says:
You said you sleep with yours. That should be a dealkill right there - since the wires get pulled and guarantee a failure. To me, that's taking advantage of the system, and raises the prices of products for others.

You're entitled to your opinion as am I. The whole point of having earbuds and mp3 players is to have music on the go. Do you honestly only listen to yours in a safe environment? You must never wear them outside cuz the sun or rain is REALLY hard on buds. You could catch your hand on the wire when getting off the mower, Should you never wear them mowing?! DEALKILL lol I guess you set like a statue in a chair to listen and more power to ya. I just want people TOTALLY informed. I wish someone would have been as honest as me when I started buying earbuds. If you're not an audiophile then you're buying IEMs for looks , durability, warranty or whatever and jlabs warranty sucks compared to skullcandy. Jus so it's known I've slept in my sennheiser 300s for over 2 years now without a failure. They cost me $30 2 yrs ago! I paid $35 for these and have returned 3 of em. Maybe you thrash around alot in your sleep, maybe I don't, I dunno

G. Chandler says:
I train in mine, work in them sometimes (carpentry), but since cord failure is #1 with these, I don't LAY on them, that's all. They're very hard to solder back.
I agree with you on the total information thing though. Odd how one guy thinks something sounds like crap and the next thinks it's the best ever, so comparison disclosure is key.

Sleeping with earbuds on is hardly unusual. Quiet music helps keep background noise from waking you. The Meelectronics M6 excels for sleeping in, tell meelec you slept with them on, they still cover you. So, @ G Chandler I also can't agree with your logic, since many brands even boast of sleeping comfort, along with many other uses that place additinal strain on wires. Not trying to say you're wrong, just a difference of opinion, please, no offense meant, I respect your take on it, we just look at it differently
I'm not defending Jbuds either, the customer service is far from stellar, at least compared to several other brands
