Worth the 12 years of AGONY (aka waiting...)!!!,
This review is from: Diablo III: Collector's Edition (DVD-ROM)
If you played the first two Diablo games, then you know quite well how addictive and rewarding this series is. Despite waiting 12 years for this game to come to fruition, DIABLO III does not disappoint anyone who has waited, nor will it disappoint those who are new to the series!
First off: let's get the Always Active DRM out of the way. Yes, it is an small annoyance, however, it is the product of an industry that is BRUTAL for piracy (as I see it the original gaming industry to spawn such). I remember way back when you could RENT a PC game, copy it, and then play it all you want without ever actually buying the game. Blizzard understands this - their Diablo franchise is one of the most coveted IP's that anyone could ever own. Hence, Blizzard isn't DUMB: either you were going to subscribe to play (which IMHO is even WORSE - I don't play WoW) or you would need an internet connection. Frankly, I have no problem with it being online DRM. You paid for the RIGHTS to play the game, not to own it. It's a touchy scenario, but nonetheless a situation brought onto all of us because of pirated software. Even with those who say BOO on You, do you think Blizzard cares? They have already sold MILLIONS of copies who have no problem playing with always online DRM. I haven't played a PC game since Half Life Episode 1 (Valve, you are KILLING ME!!!), but even that required Steam to actually play the game. Come on people, suck it up! You need to look at the greater outcome - Blizzard makes more money, hence they make BETTER GAMES!
Okay, back to the game: like an old flame rekindled, Diablo III still sparks the perfect blend of balance and combat that made the series so good:
- Combat is so simple, yet with the unlimited combinations and vast array of weapons & skills, no two adventures will be alike; it will grow as you venture further into the realms
- Skills and weapons can be straight shooters, or you can delve into the Apprentice mode and create exciting ones! Finding the 'rare' items from monster battles is still the most rewarding!
- Game balance is never burdened nor too easy: Diablo III perfectly blends combat and pace so it never ever drags or becomes too short
- Classic Diablo Quest-driven mechanics is like a drug: once you are hooked, you want more!
- Classes, even though most are the same as in past iterations, pack enough newness to make them enjoyable as ever
- The amount of loot and treasures to find are endless (at least I hope so); rumoured DLC's will keep you playing for years!
- Game mechanics require little skill to use, yet can evolve into a complex and often rewarding combat style, with each Class giving you a unique experience!
- Even after so many years, the use of the same little sounds when looting are incredible and are a great tribute to the past Diablo games!
- The banter between you and anyone you bring with you (i.e. Templar) is amazing and does break up the monotony!
Diablo II during its reign had incredible graphics and didn't require a whole lot of horsepower (compared to the DOOMS and QUAKES of the same era). Diablo III continues on the same philosophy: give the maximum eye candy on the most popular system requirements! I am running D3 on a stock MacBook Pro (2011) and it runs so smoothly!!! There are the occasional slowdowns when more than 12 enemies are on the screen, but it only happens for a few moments (combine you skills for quick kills!). The graphics are gorgeous with a huge palette of colours setting each realm with the appropriate mood! Screw those who think dungeon crawlers should only use a brown palette - Diablo III reaches into every palette and has created some of THE BEST environments ever! Blizzard even delves into multi layered levels for the dungeons, giving the player a sense of surrealism that hasn't been seen in many games of this genre.
Collector's Edition: If you don't have it now, be prepared to pay at least DOUBLE the selling price! Like the last few WoW collector's sets, Diablo III packs in great value: On awesome hard bound art book, wicked Diablo head bust with headstone USB, soundtrack (play this loud in the car you nerdling!) and other little perks. One thing that was interesting is that they also pack a full version of Diablo II + expansion pack - I can't tell you how many people I saw buy the regular edition D3 + D2 Battlechest - only a few bucks cheaper combined than the Collector's!!!! Oh well, it was hard enough to pre-order the Collector's Edition, let alone buy it on launch day. I will say it is worth the $40 extra - I think all of Blizzard's Collector Editions pack high quality stuff and AAA presentation/packaging. Unlike the past few WoW collector's however, the Diablo III CE is highly, highly sought after - no one expects Diablo IV to come out next year - so again, if you want one, be prepared to pay a pretty penny! Oh yeah, unlike other CE's, Blizzard doesn't lie when they say LIMITED.
Any CONS? Well, not really. My opinion about always online DRM was stated first - deal with it. Second, to all those who complained about the first few days, again - deal with it. It happens and it did. Now it is done. And I haven't had any issues logging on since.
I read another review comparing Diablo III to a slot machine: there are many and the premise is the same - pull the trigger, win loot. However, the biggest difference is in the delivery: Diablo III ain't your truck stop table top slot machine - Diablo III is your Belagio surrounded by Showgirls and endless drinks and food slot machine! It's all in the delivery.
Also, there is an Auction House included for buying & selling items. I guess Blizzard found it necessary to 'legalize' gold farming and if you are into it, so be it. IMHO finding those rare items yourself is part of the game - don't be a Richie Rich and buy your way through the game! Play it for what it is and what it can provide to you as an awesome experience - you are only cheating yourself. Worst case scenario play through the game in it's entirety and if you play it again and figure, "man, I need that sword to defeat that clown from hell", then go right ahead. Just sayin'.
Overall, I am completely satisfied and overwhelmed by Diablo III! If you are a fan of the series, you will not be disappointed! If you are new to the series, you will not be disappointed! Diablo III is everything that it promised to be and then some!
Note: as you can see, I only speak of the single player experience. I have not played online nor do I plan on playing online. That doesn't mean I don't like the idea, it just means that I prefer to have the full experience of Diablo III without possibly losing out when playing with more powerful or better equipped players. No disrespect, but if Blizzard did not create a balancing system like other online games, then I do not wish to play Diablo III online. Just sayin'.
