good reviews vs. bad reviews explained,
This review is from: Simmons Beautyrest Authentic Talalay Latex Foam Firm Support Queen Pillow (Kitchen)I think that the reason that some people are giving this pillow bad reviews is that the description does not properly explain the feel of this pillow. This is not a HARD pillow (what most would consider firm.) It is also not quite a SOFT pillow (no resistance beneath your head.) It is a SPRINGY pillow. It could also be described as bouncy.
Let me draw an analogy to shoes. A Birkenstock sandal has a firm supportive footbed--but no bounce. A cushioned slipper has a soft footbed--but still no bounce. An athletic shoe has a springy footbed. It is flexible, slightly hard, and has bounce. This pillow would be analogous to a less hard (but very springy) athletic shoe.
This is my all-time favorite pillow. It does need to be aired out for a while to be rid of the latex smell. I like it much better than memory foam. With memory foam you just sink. With latex, your head is cradled like in a hammock.
I think those who wrote bad reviews actually wanted a different type of pillow. This is an excellent pillow--you just need to know what you are getting. When it comes to firmness, on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being soft and 10 being hard, this pillow is a 3. For springiness, on a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being flaccid and 10 being a balloon or a super bouncy ball, this pillow is about a 7. The manufacturer just needs a better writer to describe their product.

Thanks! You answered the questions I had. I hate "hard" firm pillows; I want one that's soft, yet bouncy and supportive...pretty much like you described this one as being. The manufacturer should hire you to write their descriptions!

I would agree with the other reviewers that this is one of the best reviews I've ever read. Nice job. It makes me wonder whether or not you're an English teacher. Or philosopher. Or both. Anyway, it certainly makes one more confident about whether or not to purchase this pillow...I think I'm going to buy it now. Thanks!

I have been looking for pillows for a while and no one has discribed a pillow like you have, it sounds just like the pillow I am looking for, I don't like a soft sink in pillow or a firm (hard as a rock) no give pillow, this sounds excellent, they should give you a set of pillows for your review on this. Thanks! Maybe you could be there spoke's person?

L. Harvey: I too enjoyed your review. The shoe analogy was so clever. I presently sleep on a latex pillow and love it. I'm now looking to discard old feather pillows (feathers poking through cases :) in favor of latex for my shams. I am concerned about the smell though -- since latex is rubber shouldn't it be smell neutral? I bought my pillow at an organic store and didn't notice a smell. Since Simmons makes these, I'm just wondering if the smell means a chemical of some sort. Hope you check back so you can give me your opinion.
Edited to add: My cat sleeps on the shams so I'm as picky about his sleep as I am about my own. LOL

L. Harvey says:
Rubber CAN have a strong smell (think of tires!) But it airs out after a couple weeks. Remember, just because something is organic doesn't mean it's harmless, odorless, and healthy. Arsenic is organic. The bacteria that causes smelly farts is organic. (Please excuse my childish example! ;-)) If the pillow you got from the organic store didn't have an odor, it probably had had time to air out already. And the smell of a factory-fresh pillow wouldn't be nearly as strong as the smell of a tire!
I sleep on latex pillows all the time. But I'm too stingy to put them in my shams. I use two or three of my old cheap fiberfill pillows to create a fat sham. Since I don't sleep on them, they don't flatten out. But if it's in your budget, latex for the shams would be lovely because they keep their shape. I wouldn't worry about the smell. Lay the pillows out in the open (across the bed in your guest room, maybe) without a pillowcase on them for a couple weeks and they should be fine.
