The author unraveled a moving plot with interesting character development. The depth of the characters was definitely a strength of the book, as the plot and subplots weren't all that complex, but the pacing was even and kept my interest. There was only one flaw that I detected; when one of the characters, a police officer, allegedly committed suicide there were supposedly only 2 things missing from his pockets, his phone and his gun. I believe there must have been a third item, more on this later. The action sequences on the island toward the end of the book were rivetting, and I found it hard to put the book down. Black's style of describing characters in a way that opened a window into their minds gave three dimensions to each person. She was very clear in painting scenes, such as at the motel where the "suicide" appeared, noting that the nose of the victim's car was pointed toward the room in which he was found. A complete list of his pockets was provided ("wallet, change, comb, ID, pocket litter"), but the third thing missing should have been his car keys. Oops! Outside of that small detail, it was an excellent read.
