This review is from: House of Leaves (Paperback)
I keep hearing from people who give this book glowing reviews, that it makes you work. It doesn't lay everything out for you, you have to work for the payoff. Well guess what? Call my lazy, crazy, or whatever you wish, but I don't want to have to work that hard to enjoy a book. I work really hard at my job and at raising my 2 year-old daughter. When I crack open a book, I want to put myself and the experience in the hands of the author and let them take me for the ride. I don't want them to pull over every 10 miles or so and ask me to take the wheel for a while. Perhaps i'm in the minority, but I just didn't appreciate the hoops that I had to jump through to fully appreciate the artistry of Mark Z. Danielewski. The story was a good one, but the constant effort of having to read certain pages in the reflection of a mirror, or having to turn the page upside-down, or having to decode large portions of pages like I was running an Enigma machine in World War II, was just too much for me to take. I appreciate the effort Mr. Danielewski but I don't want to "work for it", I just want to sit back and enjoy a good story and escape for a few hours a day.
