yeh... its Ihsahn, and it owns,
This review is from: The Adversary (Audio CD)
I have every Emperor album, and I loved the latest Peccatum releases. I expected this album to own, afterall its Ihsahn, and he wrote the music for Prometheus. Everything hes been involved in has pretty much rocked. Hes a terrific musician, composer, lyricist etc. probably among the most talented artists in the metal genre today.
All that being said this album still surprised me. I Listened to Prometheus, Lost and Reverie and then this, and Im amazed. I think Ihsahn could write reggae or classical music if he wanted to, and still be atop those genres. This album has alot more straight foreward heavy metal, not as mind-bendingly complex as prometheus or as... (however you describe it) as lost in reverie. Despite this it is definitely not a step backwards for Ihsahn. Theres a combination of all kinds of styles: prog (homecoming which sounds Dream Theater ish), arcturus like symphonic "black metal", and Opeth-like soft jazzy interludes.
It all comes together to make an amazing metal album. It rocks, but theres plenty of stuff to keep your brain occupied too. To sum it up, Ihsahn is above all an amazing composer. Sure the songs wouldnt be as great without his guitar skills or impressive wide range of vocals, but what it all comes down to is composition; and this is music thats catchy, unique, varied, and intelligent. Frankly metal does not come better than this, and I highly recommend this album to anyone who likes 1. good music and 2. the sound of electric guitars.
