5.0 out of 5 stars Yeah, a 5 star review, but you should read anyway..., January 23, 2014
This review is from: Grand Theft Auto V - Xbox 360 (Video Game)
I'm sure just about everything that can be said about this game has already been said. But I feel that after reading a few reviews, I have to step in and make my own.
I bought mine on release night at Gamestop here in town and even kept the receipt too :P It was my first time even attending a midnight release for a video game and I'm sure glad I did.

This game goes above and beyond anything any game has ever done. Just like all GTA games, they evolve and get better with each one. And yes, there are some bad things about it too, but I will get on that in a moment.

First, DETAIL. The attention to detail in this game is just unreal. I've never seen a game where they paid such close attention to every tiny little aspect of the game and it makes it a more fulfilling, rounded out game. The replay value on this game is bar none as well, as its pretty hard to do any mission the same twice. In previous GTA games, replaying the story mode could be a drag, but with this one you can be in a different place at any given time for most missions for the end of it. Not to mention most missions allow you to pick out your own crew which also helps with more variety every time. AND, some missions you can switch between your characters making for even more variations for every time you go through it.

Second, the online. The online had a bumpy start and I still think Rockstar could have been better prepared, knowing this was going to be the release of the decade, yet failed to be ready for the millions of online users that flooded the servers and crashed them to hell. But they eventually got it up and going and gave everyone a bunch of cash as an apology which was cool. After various patches and little fixes to stop cheaters the online can be fun and frustrating all at once. The new missions that get released as you rank up are cool, and they put out more stuff every now and again, all for free which is cool too, yet I think we are all waiting for the Heist missions to start. I wish there were also more Survival missions as well.
The only problem I see with online is that you are at the mercy of other players. You can either all have fun with each other or just pointlessly kill one another, which gets pretty old pretty fast. There is the occasional lag as well as with any online game but at least its nowhere near as bad as Halo. (which will be a thing of the past with the new game ;)
Its also a light-year ahead of what GTA4 online was all about too. That fact you can actually get on and do more than just screw around is really cool.
One thing I wish they would completely get rid of is having a bounty put on you for stealing a random AI car. Its old and annoying and rather dumb.

As far as any issues with the game itself, its hard to find any. The only thing I wish they could have done was do away with the giant mountain in the top of the map and maybe create either Las Vegas or San Fransisco like they did in GTA SA. Rockstar is proud to say its the biggest map they've ever had, and while that is true, only about 30% of the map is of any use. Especially online, you rarely see someone leave the city. Unless they are at the Sandy Shores airport or stealing a jet from the Military base, theres not much to do on the north part of the map at all. Its kind of a bummer. Hell you cant even go to the snowy part of the map unless you find the glitch. I also have not had much encouragement to go play "water" missions. Such as go underwater and stuff. Once you see it, you've kinda seen it all.
That reminds me of another thing I really dont like. You cant actually go into either the prison or the military base at all without getting shot to s***. Unless you are on story mode and have the invincible cheat turned on, you are screwed. Even then, the cops will still be trying their best to kill you. Highly annoying. Thats a good 10% of the map right there that we cant even use.
So for having the biggest map in any game ever, just know that about 70% of it is a complete bore or useless.

I personally would to have loved to see how they could have incorporated either a Las Vegas or San Fransisco like they did in GTA SA like I said before. That could have really been awesome. But who knows what the future holds for GTA games down the road. I hope they decide to go back and do Miami again, and hopefully do San Fransisco too.

Other than all that, some honorable mentions are, the new weapon wheel selector and assortment of weapons, variety of cars and ways you can customize each of them, owning property again, overall insanity.

Not so honorable mentions are, Map size (most of it useless), music/radio selection, crashing your car and having it explode on impact, bounties for stealing random cars in online.

No matter the flaws, it is still one of the best games I have ever played. Besides all the violence, the game is fun as hell and worth it. I just hope that down the road they go back and do a few of the other places we love too. Mainly the other two cities from GTA SA and GTA VC
