5.0 out of 5 stars Great deal for one of the premier XBOX 360 franchises, March 22, 2011
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Gears of War Triple Pack - Xbox 360 (Bundle) (Video Game)
A fantastic deal on two exceptional games. As has been stated in other reviews, these are the original XBOX 360 games and not the PC version of Gears of War 1. You do not get the extended campaign in the triple pack. Another important thing to note is the All Fronts DLC is not included on a disc, but rather as a code for the digital download. You will need about a gigabyte of space on your 360 to install the DLC. Even with this slight inconvenience, it is still a great deal on two great games.

For those that have played and beaten Gears of War 3, do you recommend playing through Gears 1 and 2 or are these games too old by comparison graphically and otherwise?

I personally find their story to be compelling - I'm buying this after my wife and I finish GoW3 together so she can play through them. Graphically they're a little dated, but have always been considered some of the better looking games on the 360.

I played my first run through of Gears of War 3 on Hardcore difficulty and it wasn't that tough except Act V towards the end when you're fighting the queen. I upped the difficulty to Insane to try playing it a second time around and it was way too tough. It seemed like Insane difficulty was two notches above Hardcore where it was instant kill whereas with Hardcore, you get to be revived by your teammates.

you'll still have an awesome time in Gears 1 and 2. Feature-wise, Gears 2 is similar to Gears 3. Gears 1 is kind of bare bones. Graphics-wise, Gears 2 holds up really well. Gears 1 looks a little rough. Gameplay-wise, Gears 3 is closer to Gears 1 than Gears 2 (Gears 3 is faster and the characters seem lighter than in Gears 2). If you're used to Gears 3, playing Gears 2 may seem a little slow.

The cover system has been honed over the years. In Gears 1, it was harder to figure out what you could take cover behind. And sometimes things were super sticky (i.e., when you wanted to run, you would get sucked to cover). Gears 2, cover was much better and Gears 3, even better.

I still play Gears 2 a lot (because some of my friends don't have Gears 3 yet) but Gears 1 is only booted every once in awhile for memories.
