Not great, but some fun moments,
This review is from: Star Wars: Union (Paperback)
I'm definitely glad somebody decided to tell the story of Luke and Mara's wedding. As a fan going back to the 90's, it's such a joy to see them together. Moreover, this comic gets high marks for letting the characters relax and have fun. I loved how Mara is slowly becoming "one of the girls", while Han decides to throw Luke a bachelor's party. It's nice to see the characters enjoying life for once rather than fighting another war. By and large all of the characters are true to their on-screen counterparts, although Mara seems a bit more subdued than I remember her from the Thrawn books.
Unfortunately, somebody decided that Star Wars wouldn't be Star Wars without some harebrained scheme to kill Luke. The Imperial plot to stop the wedding is ridiculous in the extreme. A bunch of Imperial dead enders want to sabotage the wedding and seem to find the resources to do so a bit too easily (I mean, they find the woman who made Mara's dress out of a population of over a trillion people!). The ending is particularly bad and comes off as the worst deus ex machina situation I've ever seen.
I think overall the story would have been better had it focused solely on the characters enjoying the wedding. We see them so seldom in moments of peace that it would have been a nice change of pace.
Incidentally, I'm still upset Mara was killed off. For me, that marked the point at which the post-ROTJ EU went off the deep end.
