1.0 out of 5 stars Shockingly bad -- breaks fundamental Windows features, September 16, 2012
This review is from: PDF Converter Professional 8.0 (DVD-ROM)
All professional quality Windows applications open their windows in the last previous location and size set by the user. They "learn" your preferred window size and location after one use.

NOT NUANCE 8! Regardless of where you placed your last Nuance window on the desktop, and regardless of how you sized it, NUANCE 8 OPENS TINY ON THE UPPER LEFT OF YOUR SCREEN. So that you have to move and carefully re-size your Nuance window EVERY SINGLE TIME YOU OPEN IT!! It doesn't "learn" or "remember" your window size or position. And there's no option to make it do so! Worse, even when you have a Nuance window open where you want it, if you open further PDFs (such as attachments inside the main PDF), THEY OPEN TINY ON THE UPPER LEFT!! Unreadable until you resize, stretch the windows--again and again and again!

When fundamental/normal/expected/required Windows behavior like this is broken, we KNOW that the rest of the release is riddled with other bugs--they can't possibly have tested it in a user environment. Stay away.

There are other problems too--for example they let clueless UI people play "creative". Now we have non-optional, large, intrusive controls on each side and at bottom of the window. The new translucent controls are RIGHT ON TOP OF THE SCROLL BARS! They are sensitive to the SLIGHTEST roll-over, and they cause instant display of whole bars of useless buttons that nobody needs or wants. These unwanted bar-displays wipe out your scroll bars when you accidentally roll over the new controls, flashing the unwanted/useless button bars right in your face instead! Your attempt to scroll down the page turns into a frantic struggle to get the **G-D** button bars off the side of the document!

Also, they took the color out of most of the old toolbar buttons at the top of the page. So now, most of the toolbar buttons LOOK GRAYED OUT ALL THE TIME even when they are actually active. So you can't really tell when something is grayed out or not anymore, except by clicking it. It wasn't broken. It was just fine the way it was. But the cutesy, "creative" UI people were allowed to mess it all up on a misguided whim of their egos, without consulting any actual users--as usual.

DON'T BUY THIS VERSION - it's dog excrement!

I had the same open-tiny-in-upper-left problem with PDF Converter Pro 7. Thing is, it happened on only one computer (I made the mistake of buying multiple licenses at one time). On another computer, it worked as you'd expect any windows program to work, as you described. Both windows XP. Go figure. I will not get another Nuance product, at least not a PDF Converter product. When I got version 7, they let me buy 4 licenses without telling me it was End Of Life, and then the next month announced version 8, told me they'd never fix any of the mountains of bugs in version 7, and said I'd have to upgrade to version 8 at $35/license to get any updates. I almost filed a fraud complaint with the AG. I should have.
