I'm not a huge fan of historical fiction, but I love Siri Mitchell and I loved SHE WALKS IN BEAUTY!!
This is a compelling story about motherless Clara Carter as she faces the pressures of late Victorian challenges and family expectations.
Her aunt and her father insist that she win only one man's hand, the De Vries heir, to fix the breach of honor the Carter family has endured. She doesn't understand what her father and Aunt have lost. Then comes the younger De Vries brother...HEART or MONEY, decisions, decisions!
Clara is an amusing, witty, intelligent young woman who dreams of going to Vassar College. She lives with her wealthy, but distant and somewhat mysterious father and bristly aunt and because of their influence, is socially anxious and always worries if she is saying or doing the appropriate thing.
The historical facts are blended beautifully, giving an accurate depiction of what women and young girls went through to catch a husband, all for the sake of status or money. Sadly, many lives were ruined. The opulent age is fun to envision, and Siri is the BEST at that, the fabulous fashions, tons of lush fabrics, though miserably uncomfortable, lavish balls and overdone etiquette. Such fun to read about but to go back in time from our relaxed, less encumbered and restriction-free lifestyle would be quite the challenge. AN ABSOLUTE JOY TO READ!
