Quite good for the price,
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Celestron 44302 Deluxe Handheld Digital Microscope 2MP (Electronics)
The image quality is good and I can use this camera / microscope on my Mac under OS Lion with the Photo Booth application. The illumination is good and the sharpness is good. At higher magnifications, it is a challenge to focus since there is not a rack and pinion type of focuser. You have to just make small adjustments to the stand or what you are observing. Since depth of field is shallow this can be tricky. The device is not parafocal. That means that different zoom levels require different focus positions. Yes, these are problems but overall this is a great way to see small things on your computer with reasonable quality.

I've not been able to get this working under Lion, any suggestions? My Macbook Pro sees the scope, and I can select it as a camera in Photobooth, but I never get a picture.

I'm getting the same program. It shows up in photo booth, but I can't see or take any images. How did you get it to work with your Mac?

I have tried to use this product with a MacBook Pro with OSX 10.7 (Lion) with Photobooth. While the microscope is recognized by Photobooth, no images appear in Photobooth when the Celestron device is selected. Celestron Tech Support told me this week that they are aware of the problem with Lion and are working on it in the lab, however, they have no solution that they can provide at this time, nor can they provide a time estimate for a solution. I'm surprised that one of the reviewers here is able to get it to work. I have a return tag to return this to Amazon because the description of compatibility only says "Mac OSX 10.5 or later". That statement is disingenuous at best and is not only at Amazon, but is on the Celestron web site as well. Celestron is well aware that the product does not work with Lion and state that in their support Q&A, but have not corrected their product description. I have had many Celestron astronomical products and bought this product due to my experience with Celestron. I'm afraid that Celestron no longer lives up to its reputation in my experience. I'm really disappointed.

I really hope this problem gets resolved. I've been trying to get this to work on Lion for months, and I know a thing or two about macs. Tech support form this company is a joke, they actually had the nerve to tell me that it must have been something with my computer. I resorted to running it on VMware fusion, but that is in no way "mac compatible." The product takes good images but this software stuff is enough to stop me from ever purchasing anything from this company again. Being incompatible with macs is not acceptable anymore, make a better product!

I sent mine back to Amazon for a refund. I gave up when the Celestron Tech Support rep told me they had been working on Lion in the lab, but had no ETA for a solution. Even if the manage to cobble a fix for Lion, I have no confidence that it would any different with Mountain Lion and beyond.

I call BS. Celestion listing this as mac compatible is criminal.

The product does not work with MAC OSX, the description of the product in Amazon is wrong. The drivers are only for G4 Processors (8 years ago)
