This review is from: Wreck-It Ralph (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) (Blu-ray)
I must admit, I am biased towards this movie simply because of the video game references. I literally spazzed out when my friend showed me the trailer to Wreck It Ralph. So many video game characters!
*Minor spoilers ahead*
Young enough to have grown up with video games and old enough to remember the "classics" (like Tapper, Q*bert, and Duck Hunt - I'm too young to have played those, but I'm old enough to have played the newer variants before more advanced games came along), I found this movie nostalgically moving. The multitude of references and cameos bring back many good memories. I spazzed out again in the movie theatre, nearly spilling my soda, when King Candy started punching in the Konami Code. Anyone who's had a childhood will definitely recognise something from the movie, whether it be Chun Li, Space Invaders, or Sonic. Many other references are less subtle, such as Mario's mushroom and Metal Gear Solid's exclamation mark in Tapper's lost and found, or the graffiti of All Your Base Are Belong To Us and Leeroy in the entrance to Game Central Station (I love these internet references). References and cameos just keep coming, and the excitement that comes with the recognition of familiar characters wash over you wave after wave. (Donkey Kong and Mario Kart are indirectly referenced - Wreck It Ralph (the game) is modeled after DK and Sugar Rush after Mario Kart).
The plot follows a beaten path, but its traversal of this beaten path sets it apart from other movies. Ralph's journey to finding, and then coming to terms with, himself has been seen in many other movies. However, when adorned with so many video games, the journey becomes extraordinary. Also, Wreck It Ralph, unlike other movies, focuses on the journey of a "villain," the "bad guy." When did a movie tell the story of the bad guy? Never until Wreck It Ralph! When playing video games, we usually don't give a thought to the bad guy, but this movie turns the "bad guy" into a well-rounded and lovable character.
Um. Epiphany. So. For the past 12 months, I had been struggling with my forever alone predicament. I just pined to be in a relationship, you know? Just as how Ralph pined for a medal, for him to be the good guy for once. But as Ralph hopped across games in search of a medal, he realised that it's ok that he's the "bad guy." Being the "bad guy" doesn't make him any less of a video game character. He made friends and saved all of Sugar Rush. So yah, it's ok I'm alone. I got some pretty darn awesome friends and life is awesome. Seriously, when I walked out of the theatre, I was elated. Took me a while to realise why, but I'm totally cured of being heartsick.
Wreck It Ralph not only entertained me, it also brought back good memories and CHANGED MY VIEW ON LIFE.
BEST MOVIE I'V EVER SEEN.
