This review is from: The History of the Ancient World: From the Earliest Accounts to the Fall of Rome (Hardcover)
I wasn't never interested in history when I was young, because I had a hard time seeing the "big picture" when I read the history text books in school. This book is different in that it ties history with PEOPLE. The author makes history sounds like a story/biography, and that instantly makes history more interesting and easier to learn!
I want to point out that the author did pull in mythology and Biblical literature. She briefly discussed why she did that (in the Preface section). In fact, throughout the book she tried her best to explain why she interpreted things the way she did. While I may not agree with everything she said (afterall, some were interpretations based on mythology, and she admitted that they were just "good guesses'), but they were intelligent "guesses" based on artifacts and it's no less flawed than any other history text books on ancient history, which were also based on deduction of some sort based on artifacts! In fact, her explanations made me appreciate the difficulty of being a historian!
If seeing the use of mythology in a HISTORY book really bothers you, then this book is probably not for you. Personally I appreciate it, as it makes the history and stories more interesting to follow.
Also if the use of the Bible as a valid form of ancient literature bothers you, then this book is not for you either.
