The Gallows Ghost,
This review is from: The Gallows Ghost (Linford Western Large Print Ser.) (Paperback)
Cattle have been missing from the ranches of the Forester Cattlemen's Association members, and the Sheriff has his man. Or so he says.
Together, the sheriff, and the ranchers have become judge, jury, and executioners of Bob Diller, the man the Sheriff says is guilty of the crimes. But Bob swears he is innocent. This doesn't stop these men however. They intend to hang him, no matter what Bob swears, or doesn't swear. Right up to the end, he professes his innocence, until he finally comes to the realization that nothing he says is going to stop them. With that realization, he swears that he will return, and he will revenge his own murder.
Six months later, the killings start. One after another, the members of the Cattlemen's Association start turning up dead. Is it the ghost of Bob Diller returning to avenge his honor, and death? Caleb Forester doesn't know, but he does know that he has to protect his daughter. The only way to do this is to hire someone to find out what is going on, and who is responsible for these deaths. Ghost, or not.
Luke Banner, also known as "The Man Killer" is hired by Forester to find out who is behind these killings. Luke has no shortage of human suspects. Even a skull-faced ghost dressed in black.
I have to say before I read "The Gallows Ghost" I honestly didn't know if I would like it or not, as I have never been a big western fan. But this book is not only a 'western'. It is a detective story, a mystery, and even a romance, written with the west as the background. And superbly done.
Mr. Howard has written a story that will grab you, and take you for a ride across the plains, on a trip you will not forget.
He takes you into the emotions of a man, who you think you should hate, and cannot do so. He puts you into the life of another man who you feel has no heart, and you find that he has more heart than most.
One minute you are sure that you know who is behind the whole thing, the next you are sure another is. And then that is changed.
I highly recommend that you read this superbly written book. It is written by a man, who knows how to put words together, to make you laugh, cry, and even shiver in fear. But never will you be bored.
Mr. Howard is truly the master of mystery, horror, and yes, even westerns.
