Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: HP 15-g070nr 15.6-Inch Laptop (Optical Drive Not Included) (Personal Computers)
I bought this and it works well.i took win 8 off and currently have linux running, plan to install Vista as a dual boot. Some manufacturer's are making win 8 laptops so they don't allow a user to uninstall win 8 including Asus and acer/gateway.and I wasn't upset that it had no optical drive, even though more and more software is available through download still many people resist.i find it annoying having to keep disks aroundmi have steam and all I do is pop in a password and my screenname and boomni can download steam games anywhere.
As for the performance, the laptop does well for most users. The processor is a low wattage processor and isn't as powerful or fast as the average processor but the low end processes are much better than the ones of even two years ago. Also.much of the hp drivers hindered performance so I would take them off(such as hp power, which was annoying because the default windows power settings are just fine and allow for more user input). So taking thise off will help improve performance.i also out of habit don't run 50 programs at once so that may be another factor of why performance is so much better for me. I usually run two or three but I have had a bunch of Internet windows open and it ran just fine.i also like the fact that this has 3 usb ports, not one or two as many cheap models have now.the screen is nice and so is the shell case.ironically the outside is nicer than the inside of the case as the inside will show any sign of touching the surface.so they should have made the outside and inside look the same.
If anyone has specific questions, they can always ask under my review and I will reply to the question(s).

We're a 100% Linux family, and I'm planning on purchasing this for my autistic adult son to replace an 8 year old machine. I was wondering if the internal WiFi was recognized by Linux? I know that many don't. Planning on running Mint 17, or Arch. Thanks!

I actually looked into a few flavors of linux, tried them out.i think Linux mint xfc is the best.the newest versions of Linux work well with the newest wireless cards.

Thanks for the quick reply. We mostly run the MATE desktop, except for my servers which are headless Arch boxes, just using SSH to manage. I switched my family to Linux in 1999, and have never looked back!

I just switched.I like that I can run my steam games in Linux,I think Linux software will continue to expand.not difficult to use if you use a flavor that has java and flash included in the os.

jj, yes i recommend this for an 8 year old.
serfer,it owuld be hard to find a computer without a web cam now. but be careful ,when not using it make sure you disable it or put a piece of paper in front of it. there have been cases of hackers turning on web cams when the laptop is off and it tapes peoples.then later people have seen videoos of themselves posted on youtube or other site.so the government isnt the only one interested in spying on people with windows.

I want to buy this laptop for my teenagr who is learning programming at school. Will this laptop be adequate for him to install Java and Eclipse, and learn programming?
