4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect combo of "why" and "how", August 19, 2012

This review is from: Practical Paleo: A Customized Approach to Health and a Whole-Foods Lifestyle (Paperback)
First, one plus for this book over some other in the same genre, is the fact that the recipes are SIMPLE. Down to earth, basic ingredients, easy to prepare without fancy equipment.

Second, the first part of the book reads like a textbook -- bright, colorful, informative -- with lots of charts, graphs, & pictures that help to simplify the science behind this way of eating. This is the kind of book you could hand to someone brand new to the Paleo lifestyle, and they would GET what you are talking about, with minimal effort. While there are Paleo books out there with more detailed science, most people are NOT going to take the time to plow through them without already being a convert. This one takes common problems and uses the science to address them directly in a simple, how-to approach.

How about the taste of the food? I would give it a 'B." This is the only reason for 4 stars instead of 5. The recipes serve the function of filling you up, with super healthy things, and taste pretty good. There are other Paleo cookbooks where the finishing product comes out tastier, in my opinion. But the simplicity of preparation, again, must be commended. And if you are already pretty good in the kitchen, with a few tweaks here and there, you can make these basic recipes phenomenal.

Overall, thank you, Diane, for putting this out there. This is information that desperately needs to made as accessible as possible to otherwise skeptical public. As someone who suffers from Type 1 Diabetes, Rheumatoid Arthritis, anxiety and depression, and multiple skin issues, I am living proof of what can happen from a lifetime of consuming "junk" disguised as healthy food. America has been brainwashed by the FDA and Big Food...it will take years of dilligence to overcome this, but "Practical Paleo" is an important step.

Totally agree! I'm one of those who can never leave well enough alone. Can't remember the last time I followed a recipe exactly. Definitely loving all the great ideas though!

I really appreciate the fast paleo aspect. I've been slow cooking (braising and using complicated flavor profiles for months now and it's nice to be able to make something delicious fast)--almost like having a day off in the kitchen. Dianes idea for "pesto sauce" with macadamia, cilantro, and garlic was brilliant and fresh but I've already tweaked it by adding lime to the leftover sauce and am using it as a salad dressing.
