1.0 out of 5 stars Too loud for me, let alone the cat, October 3, 2008
Length:: 0:37 Mins

It's a good looking device, seems like the cat may have eventually gotten interested in it, but it's incredibly loud. We set it up in our kitchen, and it was like a meat-grinder running 24/7.
I suppose if you could put it in the garage or somewhere where you couldn't hear it, it would be OK. But I could hear it running overnight, two rooms away in the bedroom when our place was quiet.
We couldn't handle it and returned it.

I have had several of the Petmate waterer and the only time any of them have become noisy is when the water level is getting low. Perhaps this particular item had a problem, but I am using my third one. With all, the only time they were noisy was when I'd forget to fill the reservoir.

Wow, that is really loud, my little Terrier would attack that thing so loud it is. Maybe its only your device, but I was planning on getting this, im not know that I saw this. Thanks for the review.

Thanks so much for the video, I could at least see (hear) for myself that it would scare my cats away rather than get them to drink from it.
Much appreciated!

I almost returned mine too, as I thought it was loud. Oddly enough, though, I switched it off intending to empty it and repackage it for return. I got distracted with a long phone call and when I came back to it I switched it back on for the hell of it and, surprise surprise, it ran almost silently. I don't know why that happened but it has worked silently ever since (3 months). The only time I hear anything is when it is time to add water to it.

i agree it's too loud. i have the white one that i bought 6yrs ago and it is not loud like that. when you 1st plug it in it makes that noise but goes away immediately. i have always disassembled to clean which is why it has lasted so long. never had a problem withthe pump.

It deserves to be said yet another time--thanks for taking the time/effort to post a video review. It's much appreciated... I guess I know why the ones that are never returned cost so much (quality control)... for something like this, I would be annoyed to return it (especially since I both live where Amazon is and that being true... I would have to take a bus ride to the nearest mail center, not convenient!)

I have an older model of this. The submersible pump must be primed. If you plug it in and get the pump running before you fill it with water, it will make noise because of the air in the pump. Fill it with water first, then plug it in. It will make noise for a few seconds, but once the water is flowing, it will be silent. If the water level is low, it will start making noise again. After watching the video posted here, my guess is that the pump is no good. It's a simple system and there is little that can be wrong with it.

Thanks for your review, and especially the video. I was considering buying this product, and am now looking into getting a Drinkwell instead. Did you end up getting a different fountain, that you would recommend instead? I'd love to know what worked out for you. Thanks again!

I have one of these, too, and I agree that the only time it's noisy is when there's air bubbles in the system. This is almost always a sign that the water's too low; but sometimes the pump just gets an air bubble stuck, and the only thing to do is unplug it for a bit and let the air escape.

Oh gosh this would have been wonderful in our home, sans the noise. I am so appreciative that you took the time to do a video so we could actually hear how loud it is. I have 6 cats and 3 little dogs, my pom would be constantly barking and never get used to that noise, maybe a couple of the cats would get used to the sound, but overall the constant sound would create a problem. I am taking it out of my cart. What a shame, its such a good concept.
