This review is from: PetSafe Deluxe Bark Control Collar, PDBC-300 (Misc.)We got it for our small dog. The first time it went off, it startled him so much that he yelped. Which only made it shock him harder... This created a vicious cycle until he was crying, I was tackling him (so I could get the darn thing off) and then he hid under the bed for like an hour. He only came out when he heard a new noise worth barking at (obviously never correlating the shock with the bark).

There is still hope!
A few years ago, a friend of mine had a similar experience with her dog (Jack Russell) the first time she used an escalating shock collar, except she was out on a walk at the time it happened. She worked with the dog over the next few days, only using the collar while she was around and giving the "no bark" command (hand signal) along with the shock. The dog then understood the connection between the barking and the shocking. Considering her dog is deaf, I imagine that might have been a difficult connection to make. The dog wears the collar at night now and doesn't bark.
