there are better and cheaper alternatives,

Like someone else said all you really need is the lint from your dryer filter. But if you want a packaged version of fast lighting tinder, Just go to your local store and buy a box of tampons. They are cheaper, get more bang for your buck, they are self contained and sealed, and they light up like a Christmas tree with just a few sparks.

I have used MANY different methods for tinder, but this is the first time I heard the tampon version. I just tried that and WOW!!!! I thank you for posting this, that never crossed my mind to try that. I have took a cheap box, added a little fuel to them and sealed them in a waterproof container. AMAZING.

The fuel is a nice touch. Now us men no longer need to be ashamed to buy tampons for our ladies. All we have to say is that it is a great ready made fire tinder. lol

They also make fantastic additions to a first aid kit (although obviously without the fuel added). They are, after all, designed to absorb blood, and they do a good job at that regardless of the reason for the bleeding. They're both more space-efficient and more absorbent than rolls of gauze -- although probably not worth unpacking for anything but the sort of seriously bleeding wound that most people (thankfully) never need to deal with while backpacking.
