Primarily worth it for the live tracks,
This review is from: Empty Spaces (Audio CD)
"Empty Spaces" was the second single off the band's Heart Like a Sky release and while it scarcely dented the U.K. Hot 100 it is perhaps best remembered for the live tracks appended to it making it highly desirable for fans. "Empty Spaces" is a bit typical of Spandau's late 1980s output; not as vibrant or daring as their earlier stuff but hardly offensive and generally pleasant. It's unclear when the two live tracks were recorded but it's a safe bet it comes off either the Parade tour circa 1984/5 or perhaps the Through the Barricades tour circa 1986/7. Since Amazon doesn't list the tracks or running times here they are:
1. Empty Spaces - 3.56
2. With the Pride/Gold - 7:55
3. True - 6:27
"With the Pride" was a track from Parade and not a single, which leads me to believe that this live recording comes from that tour. Stylistically "With the Pride" leading into "Gold" isn't all that seamless or smooth but in its own way it works. "True" pretty much sounds like what you would expect with only a few stylistic diversions from the original studio version. Sure, "True" is a bit schmaltzy and atypical for Spandau for that era and perhaps everyone has heard it a few times too many. All in all it's nice to have the live tracks and hints at what Spandau was like live in concert during this era. It's a bit of a pity they didn't put out a live record as they sound pretty tight here!
