Not a bad intro,

This review is from: Live Hacking: The Ultimate Guide to Hacking Techniques & Countermeasures for Ethical Hackers & IT Security Experts (Paperback)
This book is not a bad lite intro to a few different tools and if you have no experience in the subject matter its not a bad read. The book title claims to be "The Ultimate Guide to Hacking Techniques and Countermeasures for Ethical Hackers & IT Security Experts." Sadly, the title is way off base. There are some decent examples of using some common tools but this book is not going to be an easy button to popping your first shell. The book is 185 pages which is fairly lite for this type of a text. I can tell you for our classes our book that we use for just the recon phase is over 230 (full-size) pages. If you are looking for an intro book this book isn't bad (but it isn't great either). If you can buy it used or at a discount rate give it a look.
