I went through 2 of these before giving up.,
This review is from: Zune 30 GB Digital Media Player (Black) (Electronics)
The first one I bought was bricked right out of the box. It displayed the battery symbol you see during the intial charge, but couldn't get past that. I charged it over night and it would not shut off or go into sleep mode. It just displayed that battery symbol until it ran out of juice and died. I charged it again and it did the same thing.
The second one I got would not let me flash it to the latest version. It would not let me sync without this newest version either. The Microsoft help pages were worthless. I finally found a forum that suggested I replace the downloaded firmware with the orginal firmware off the disc. (The software automatically pulls the latest version off the web.) Once this intial load was on the zune I was able to update to the latest version. Pain. It took me two days to figure it out and I have a good understanding of 'puters. I feel sorry for anyone that buys this product and doesn't know crap about a PC.
Finally I returned the second one all together. I was pampering the hell out of this thing and the hard drive still started making horrible noises. It sounded like it was in the last throws before death, so I took it back before my return period was up and I was stuck with a expensive paperweight.
I mostly liked the product while it was working. It was cool watching Aqua Teen on my transit to work. I may revist the Zune in the future, AFTER all these bugs are worked out and they start listening to the customers. I would not recommend this product to anyone except the rich who can afford to throw away money experimenting with a product that more than likely is going to break.
