Very nice looking, but too tight and zipper design needs improvement,

These look even better than their photo. They have an expensive looking finish, and the leather is smooth and flexible.
Unfortunately, though, I had to send them back. They are too tight and too hard to get on.
First, some background information: I've been buying 8 1/2 shoes for thirty years. Different shoes vary a bit in fit, and there have been two cases in that time where a 9 in a shoe store fit better. But out of the ten pairs of shoes sitting in my bedroom right now (boots, athletic, formal, etc.), nine of them are 8 1/2. The only 9 is a New Balance Minimus, which are notorious for running small.
So I got these in 8 1/2, as I have every non-athletic shoe for the last ten years. And they are simply too small.
I got my foot in them OK. The first hint about size was the struggle to get the zipper closed. I now have a good idea why most zip boots have side zippers. A zipper in the back must conform to the curve of the heel. Zippers work best on a completely straight path.
I struggled for about five minutes to get the zipper on the right foot zipped. You need a valet or three hands to do it, I think. Trying to pinch the zipper together with one hand while zipping from a different angle with the other hand was something I was unwilling to do every time I wore the shoes.
When I finally got it on, the right shoe felt a bit tight, but I thought I might be able to break it in. Then I started trying to get on the left one.
That one took ten minutes and changing to some thinner socks. When I did get it on, it was also tight in general, but in particular, it was so tight on the ball where the Achilles tendon ends that it was unbearable.
I think I would have probably been OK with a 9 (though I would have to try it on), so I was going to do a replacement. However, coming from a third party seller, I could not do a replacement - only a return. If the item returns to the price I bought it at, I might give a 9 a try. The shoe really is nice looking.
