Weird image quality issue?,
This review is from: Dune (Extended Edition Steelbook) (DVD)
I (like many others) had been waiting for a Region 1 release of the Extended Edition of DUNE for a long time, and when it came out I (like many others) snatched it up with the quickness. All in all, it's a pretty cool package for DUNE fans, but one of my two major "upgrade" concerns for the new EE was the image quality in certain scenes. The best example can be seen in the scene on the Theatrical Version where Paul talks to Duncan ("May the hand of God be with us all.") ...on both the standard DVD release and this new EE one, there's a curious reddish tint or wash on the right side of the screen. It's not jarring, but it's subtle enough to just catch your attention, and I'm certain that it's not due to the way the scene was shot, set design etc. It could be a transfer flaw, or perhaps it's just the way it plays on my DVD player/television, but it's there and I was really hoping that it'd have been addressed for the EE release. Has anyone else noticed this?
The only other "gripe" I have is the lack of DTS, but it's easily forgivable by simply upping the volume and letting the 5.1 mix do it's thing. :)
Aside from that, it's a pretty good deal, and the tin/plastic packaging is very cool. The extended version is good, but the new narration sucks. The damn fool even mispronounces some of the names ("Pitter" DeVries?!? Where the hell was the script supervisor?) and is a poor subsitute for Virginia Madsen's Irulan. The making of extras are a welcome addition, but where the heck's the trailer? That was one of my faves... sorely missed here.
All in all, I'd call it even between the goods and the bads. Well worth the upgrade from the barebones standard release.
"Usil no longer needs the weirding module."
