Poor Craftmanship, too tight around calf,

This review is from: Chippewa Men's 11" Steel Toe 27863 Engineer Boot (Apparel)
The Chippewa steel toe boot is a halfway decent attempt at the classic MC, but for me its a fail. While I was unpacking them they seemed like they might be good. The leather seemed nice and all seemed well, but when I started inspecting them and began taking a closer look, everything began to unravel. The changes in these boots from the ones I wore in the 80's and 90's go a lot further than just the loss of the bold brass square buckle that used to be such a dominant aspect of the boot. The first thing I noticed wrong was the area under the Buckle strap. It seemed pinched in with dimples. I suspect its from cutting the leather shorter to save on costs. I thought that defect might be something that could possibly break in and stretch out, but it didn't end there. The soles were a bit too stiff and plastic-like and not as flexible as the rubbery ones from the past. The ultimate problem came when I tried them on and had found the leather around my calf to be too tight. I tried loosening the buckle, but even with it wide open it was still too tight. The fact that it didn't fit around my leg dealt a death blow to the boots... that was a fatal defect I couldn't overlook or get around...so I returned them. If you are a lady or a slim man, then give them a try. If you're a bigger guy forget it. Its time for me to try the Frye brand.
