Easy to read, objective advice for first-time parents,
This review is from: Heading Home With Your Newborn: From Birth to Reality, 2nd Edition (Paperback)
Our pediatrician's nurse practioner gave us this book at our "meet the doctor" visit, while I was still pregnant, so I got to start reading it before I was sleep-deprived! I enjoyed the book's tone, and that it didn't advocate any particular practice or parenting style, just gave basic facts, and an idea of what life might be like during the early weeks.
After the baby was born, I found this book was somewhat harder to read in my sleep-deprived state than What to Expect the First Year or The Baby Book (due to the more conversational tone), but it was still extremely helpful. It gave me the short, common-sense answer to whatever I was looking up--and if the answer wasn't in this book, then it was usually because it was something beyond one of the basic newborn issues, so it would be in one of the other two books.
A couple of times I wished this book didn't stop with the newborn stage! I wished there was another book like it that continued with advice for older babies...but, by that time, I realized, I had started to get comfortable with being a parent, and didn't need to rely on books so much to figure out what to do. Now that my newborn has grown into a toddler, I would recommend this book as an excellent resource for first-time parents who want a simple book to get them through the first rough weeks. No information overload, just the right amount.
