3.0 out of 5 stars Works great so far BUT..., January 6, 2009
This review is from: Seagate FreeAgent Go 250 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive ST902503FAA2E1-RK (Black) (Personal Computers)
I am using this hard drive to back-up my computer and so far it works great. The only thing that prevented me from giving it a 5-star rating is that software updates won't install on my computer because I'm running Vista 64-bit Home Premium. Seagate only supports Vista 32-bit. No where on the packaging or in the specs for the unit is this poined out, in fact it specifically says that it is compatible with Vista.

Correct on the 64 bit part. A lot of manufactures are in the same boat...poor incomple specs.

Good review

I too just bought it and it says it runs fine with Vista and I am really disappointed that I can't receive the software updates since I am running Vista 64 Home. It still works fine however the updates will not work.

I am planning to buy this product and I am also using windows vista 64 bit. I am just trying to evaluate the degree of incompatibility of this drive with vista 64 bit. Does it not work with this OS or it fairly works with this OS w/o supporting some "nice to have" features only. Can anyone guide?

I checked with Seagate, there are now drivers for 64 bit machines.
check out this link;

Actually I just called Seagate and asked them about the problem with this model not accepting 64 bit Vista -only 32bit-, but they have made some updates. It just takes one more step after purchase instead of one -which is just purchase item and install-. One has to go to the Seagate website, click on Support & Downloads, on the right hand side towards the middle of the page in a grey box one must click "Support for 64 bit systems" and it will help us -the ones who bought this model up date our hard drive so it will accept Vista 64bit. I hope that this helps.

Does the security software still work, something about 256 encryption.

I'm glad that Seagate has developed updates for Vista 64-bit. I am in the process of changing to Windows 7 because of other problems with Vista-64 bit and other software. Ugh! On the bright side, I understand from folks who use Windows 7 that it is very stable, at least so far.
