5.0 out of 5 stars Great Little Camera, April 3, 2012

Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Panasonic Lumix TS4 12.1 TOUGH Waterproof Digital Camera with 4.6x Optical Zoom (Silver) (Electronics)
I just got this camera and after setting it up which was very easy i am impressed with the video and picture quality, as far as the previous review about water safety warnings, when i turn my camera off and on total time for the display to show up is 3 seconds and with NO water safety warnings, i dont know why the previous reader keeps getting the warning. i have not tried the camera in underwater setting yet and thats why i am giving it a 4 star, but will be using it in Tahiti next month and will leave a follow up comment. Nice job panasonic for now.

4/22/2012, this is followup for those who have doubts about this camera, after using it for 2 days in Moorea Tahiti, i could not be happier, it has done a great job on pictures and videos, the camera comes on within 1 second and ready for use, i have used it under water down to 12 meters (40 feet) not one leak into the door housing, the seal is great, i clean the camera under fresh water after every use, and when i open the door to change the battery i wipe the wetness from the seat. i rate this camera a 5 star. i will load a video and pictures when i have access to free internet. cheers

I would be interested.
The touch screen is what you are talking about it think. It could be a problem in water as it is heat sensitive I think.

Eric says:
Saw reviews that say the Sony picture isn't that good. Too many pixels on too small of a sensor.
The TS-4 is the most versatile and rugged on paper, but shares the same body as the TS-3, which can not be reliably submerged for long periods. If it ever, ever leaks, no matter how careful you are, Panasonic voids the warranty.
If you get a rugged camera and want to spend any real amount of time snorkeling or swimming, get the marine case to use. Rely on the built-in ruggedness for rain, cold, waterfalls, but not protracted submersion.

The pixel count on the ts4 is an advantage. However the sony reviews indicate the cmos sensor is a newer technology and (at the very least) better in low light.

True, I was disappointed that the TS4 isn't backlit.
On the Sony, there's also the issue of it costing 500 dollars. Yikes! :)

Just wait.. the price will come down.

There was also the issue of barrel distortion in the Sony. They still haven't shaken that problem.
At least they don't use proprietary memory anymore.

I have not heard that. Is this common with point and shoot camera or specific to the lens of the Sony?

Eric says:
I've only seen the complaint against sony's point and shoots. Saw the same with the Sony TX-10. David Pogue even made mention of it. I think CNET is where I saw it still affects the new one as well. Edge blur was an issue too.

It may be the way they folded the lens or similar. Well I have not seen this with my TS4. I learned on a Nikon FM2 so I like the manual mode. So this mode is nice in that you can play with the settings to achieve superior results (I think at least).

You have to press the set reset button at the end of the 12 step intro, this is the button in the middle of the 4 arrow buttons. (Menu/Set Button) then it will stop warning you each time you start the camera.
