5.0 out of 5 stars It's officially a revival, March 20, 2003
This review is from: Hittin' the Note (Audio CD)
"Hittin'the Note" marks a revival that's been a long time coming since the Allmans first reformed back in 1989. Sure, no Dickey Betts is a gaping hole in the band for some, but as a whole, the Allmans haven't sounded this tight, this relaxed, this joyously spirited since the original lineup first stormed the Fillmore East. With Betts' country influences gone, the album is a return to the deep blues that the Allmans began their dynamic career with: Gregg Allmans old-school growl, his Delta and Midwestern blues and R&B influences meeting Warren Haynes' more modern, rock-blues inclination (there's a lot of the Mule beneath the surface in these tunes, and that's just great). Still, it's a disc that finds every member of the band providing subtle and overwhelmingly cohesive input: Derek Trucks' ripping slide and world soul bent, Oteil's thumping bass that adds a touch of funk to the ABB that they've never really tapped before, and the legendary 3-man drum/perc section...now more the "freight train" that Duane Allman envisioned than ever.
