3.0 out of 5 stars Important, but Overly Scholarly, February 3, 2008
This review is from: Souled Out: Reclaiming Faith and Politics after the Religious Right (Hardcover)
The purpose of "Souled Out," explains Dionne, is to explain why the crude exploitation of faith for political advantage by the Religious Right is over. This move was partly aided by neo-atheist writers demanding that believers live up to their proclaimed values, and asserting (Sam Harris) that "Certainty about the next life is simply incompatible with tolerance in this one."

Readers, however, en route to accomplishing Dionne's purpose, are likely to find themselves overwhelmed with Dionne's recitation of unquestionable expertise on the role of religiosity in general, and find it tedious to extricate the current forces operating to not only strengthen even evangelical America but draw it away from its recent focus on sex.

Readers are not accomplishing Dionne's purpose; Dionne is doing that.

Sheesh. Lose the convoluted syntax and throw away the thesaurus. You are impressing nobody.

Do you have the slightest idea what you're talking about? For all of your verbosity, you've really not said much of anything about the book aside from expressing an opinion that Dionne seems to like the way his own prose reads. Your review reads as though you are trying to project some of your own foibles (i.e., being "overly scholarly") onto Dionne. I agree with tudorguy....you're impressing nobody with your pomposity.

Mr. Eslkidson:
This is not a review, but mere twaddle.

Perhaps one might say the same of your comment, Mr. Nemeth. Not an analysis of a review, but mere twaddle.
