3.0 out of 5 stars Not the Same Without Viv, May 18, 2011
This review is from: The Lucy Show: The Official Fourth Season (DVD)
This show is not the same without Vivian Vance. Mr. Mooney always yelling and getting hysterical gets annoying after a while. The show has no direction anymore because there is no consistency to the writing. It is a mistake not to mention Lucy's onscreen kids Jerry and Chris. Jerry makes two final appearances in the episodes "Lucy at Marineland" and "Lucy the Choirmaster". He is never to be seen or referred to again.

Also, stars walking into Lucy's life consistently boxes the series in. There are some good episodes and even some superior ones. I love the "Wing DIng" episode, "Lucy Discovers Wayne Newton", the one where Lucy and the Countess become spies, "Lucy the Robot" and "Lucy Bags a Bargain"...but ther rest of the series ranges from mediocre to just o.k.

Lucy is just plain annoying when she's Iron Man Carmichael. THe episodes with Dean Martin and Bob Crane are terrible. What I loved as a child I now realize is just silly. Its not Lucy's fault. She is always a joy but her writers are just terrible.....they changed the "Lucy" character into someone dumb and stupid....Lucy Ricardo was never stupid...she was clever, conniving, and smart! And so was Lucy Carmichael in the Viv years. But this so-so season is just Thus, the three star rating...not bad...not great...just so-so....its just not the same without Viv.

I would have to disagree, Viv was a great character, but I don't feel that she was the reason for the shows success, I've always been amused by Mr. Mooney's yelling at Lucy, and I thought the change was good for the show moving to california and writing the kids out of the show, but to each their own.

I used to watch The Lucy Show when I was a very young child. I always preferred the Vivian Vance episodes to the California ones -- and still do. However, after re-watching Season 4, these episodes are much better than I remembered. There are some weak ones to be sure, but every episode has its moments and I'll still take a less-than-stellar Lucy Show episode over most of what's on the air today.

Amen! I enjoyed watching Viv more on I LOVE LUCY and especially on THE LUCY SHOW. She was terrific. After reading her biography, I didn't really like Vivian Vance much, but I loved Ethel Mertz and Vivian Bagley!

I have to agree with the WING DING ep - by far one the best and funniest on the set; the song is hysterical and shows off both Lucy and Mel playing both oddly to and against their type - very funny and well done and a pity that nothing is made from the duo again in Season 4 (Lucy gets both television exposure and a recording contract - so, what happend after? - nothing, sadly); the season is very hit or miss and without Viv there is no real "partner in crime" outside the Countess (Mary Jane really is just there to bounce the crazy off of most of the time and plays more to just being the spectator than agent) who is often just as crazy as Lucy (she steals the whole show in LUCY, THE UNDERCOVER AGENT with her turn as a Russian spy while Lucy's HELLO DOLLY bit just falls flat - at least for me). The kids disappear as does the whole premise of the show which now will slide into season five and six setting up what HERE'S LUCY will pick up on and run with for just as many years - but; I do love Lucy and yes, the shows are dated and a few are somewhat sad (LUCY, THE SUPERWOMAN is truly painful to watch - the show slips from being a sitcom to a live action cartoon that never pays off with any laughs...and LUCY AND BOB CRANE - you simply can not watch that and not think about how he died and what he was doing in his spare time...wild!) but I'm buying them all and will enjoy them as a whole for what they were, are and will forever be - Lucy.

I agree that without Viv the show went down hill. In fact Lucy is often bossy, obnoxious and far to wound up. Without Viv to put her in her place she often comes off as arrogant. In many of the earlier episodes, seasons 1 - 3 , Lucy is annoying at times. As the chief of the volunteer fire dept she is bossy. As a former military WAC she is over confident and egotistical. As a cop (How did she get thur police training so fast?) she is on a power trip. All of this is fine if we have Viv to bring her back down to Earth. And no one can stand up to Lucy except Vivan Vance. Lucy's personallity is to strong for anyone else to take on. Only Viv equals her.
