This review is from: Merrell Men's Moab Waterproof Hiking Shoes (Apparel)
I've been wearing Merrell hiking shoes for a number of years now and am now on my fifth pair. Unlike other shoes I've tried, they provide the best support and comfort for me. I've enjoyed wearing these shoes on exercise walks that I undertake three to four times weekly, weather permitting. Before going on to the issue of durability, I should preface this matter by saying that almost all my walking is done on the well-maintained lawn of a soccer field complex--basically the type of terrain you would find on a golf course and not at all the rough, punishing terrain of disciplined mountain hiking or some such.
The problem is that the last two pairs that I purchased, however, have not held up very well. Specifically, the uppers have deteriorated badly with fairly modest usage. Both pairs are Moab Hikers--one low and one mid-height. By "the uppers", I mean everything above the sole and inner sole. On the low hikers the uppers on both the left and the right shoes have seperated from the bottoms entirely for the first 3+ inches from the point of the toe on back and the fabric forming the toe box and sides has really noticeably deteriorated to the point that there are actual holes on the sides of the toe boxes of both shoes and the overall apearance is very shabby. On the mid-height hikers, the newest of my Merrell shoes, holes have also appeared in several places on the sides of the toe boxes and the the pull strap at the top rear of the shoe has broken away on one end thus rendering this handy feature useless. On both pairs of these shoes the sole surfaces themselves have held up very well but the uppers (or tops) are a shabby mess. Considering that almost all of my walking is done on what most hikers would consider to be easy, gentle and forgiving terrain, I'm rather amazed at how poorly these shoes have stood the test of time.
I'm writing to the Merrell customer service people to see if they can in some way rectify the problem and will re-post when the matter is finally settled.
