Horrifying Story That Needed To Be Told,
This review is from: Escape from Camp 14: One Man's Remarkable Odyssey from North Korea to Freedom in the West (Hardcover)
Escape from Camp 14 is the story of the only man to have ever grown up and escaped from a North Korean prison camp. Shin Dong-Hyuk's story is moving, horrifying, and needed to be told. Growing up as one of two sons in a prison camp, he was never taught the principles of human decency. Always on the brink of starvation, everything in his life revolved around trying to find something to eat. Everything changed when he began to discover that there was a world outside Camp 14. A world where people ate grilled meat. The story follows his escape from the camp, travels through the North Korean underground, and eventual arrival in South Korea and eventually the U.S.
I highly recommend this book. It's short, well-written, and affecting.
Another Korean book to consider reading is Please Look After Mom (Vintage Contemporaries). It's the sad story of a South Korean mother who goes missing, and the thoughts of her family after she is gone. Also highly recommended for people interested in the Korean culture.
