5.0 out of 5 stars 'Atonement' leaves a resounding profound lasting affect worth cherishing forever, June 27, 2008
This review is from: Atonement (Widescreen Edition) (DVD)
The adaptation from novel 'Atonement' by Ian McEwan to film is stunningly and loyally brought to the screen by Keira Knightley and 1996 'Pride and Prejudice' director Joe Wright. The use of sound for the urgent clickity-clack of the typewriter in several scenes is ideal in telling this tale, as well as perspective on behaviour. With standout performances by all involved but particularly to the young Briony Tallis (Saoirse Ronan), James McAvoy in one of his hardest roles to portray, and somewhat brief but impressive performance from Keira Knightley. The story revolves around Briony Tallis and her misinterptritation of a letter and other seemingly private events between budding young lovers Cecilia Tallis (Keira Knightley) and Robbie Turner (James McAvoy) which plunge all of their future lives into peril and propelling Briony to somehow find a way to atone for her actions before it is too late. The role of the older Briony Tallis (Romola Garai) was originally for Abbie Cornish but she was busy filming 'Elizabeth: The Golden Age'. 'Atonement' is one of the best films based on a book I have seen in a long time. Daily Mirror says "As close to perfect as a movie can get". I have to agree. Fans of the book are sure to love this film, as well as many others. I found it very beneficial reading the novel first. Ian McEwan as an executive producer of the film is an extra special bonus.
