This review is from: City of the Legions. 1. (City of the legions.1: The Founding Father) (Kindle Edition)
Anthony A Roberts starts this novel in the year 43 AD, during the reign of Emperor Tiberius Cladius and his plan to fully conquer Britannia. As the story unfolds it encompasses events both in Britannia and Rome.
The author uses this period of time in the history of the Roman Empire to give us a first hand insight into the culture, lifestyle and reaction of the Britons to the invasion and occupations of their lands by the Roman legions. The Roman military camp of Castra Deva (modern day Chester) becomes a focal point for the interactions that dominate the storyline between Britons and Romans and as the author states it the fort acts `as a linchpin for a story of ambition, desire and determination'.
The characters are well developed, the storyline flows well and the whole novel is relaxed reading. The few flaws I found in the novel could have been easily overcome by tighter editing. I now look forward to reading the second book in this series `City of the Legions: The next Generations'.
