An ititial look at the Contour Roam2 camera
, September 20, 2013
I'm offering a review of the Contour Roam2 Waterproof HD camera.
First: I have to express my disappointment in discovering I didn't need the iPhone app for Contour Camera, listed as Contour Connect in the app store, because this camera does NOT have Bluetooth capability. What a letdown. Also the camera will have to be configured via the Contour Storyteller software while connected to my laptop via a supplied USB cable. There will be no previewing video though my iPhone either, which I guess could go without saying- but I said it any way. So much for ease of use so far.
Second: The mounts that come with the camera (there are two, a profile mount, a rotating flat-surface mount, and flat-surface mount adhesive) require using an adhesive attachment. Who wants to ruin a nice helmet with a "sticky application patch" on the side. Once on, they are on, so I'm going to have to purchase a separate helmet for attaching the camera to. Cha-ching.
Third: The carrying bag that comes with the camera is just that. A small cloth bag that doesn't offer much protection, if any, maybe only to dust. If you want protection looks like there will have to be another purchase in your future. Another $30 if you get it from Amazon.
Fourth: It says "waterproof" but if you search Amazon you'll find they sell a "waterproof case" for the camera. As is the camera itself is actually waterproof to 3 ft. only. Not that I will ever have need of a waterproof capability but maybe someone reading this review will and find it a handy fact to know.
Fifth: Order a MicroSD card when you order this camera because this one only comes with a 4-Gb card. (records about 8 minutes of video per Gigabyte on the 1080p HD setting, according to the Storyteller software)
I've only done a short video test to make sure the thing works, and it does, but for an adequate review of video quality I'll have to charge the camera for a few hours first.
I may have wished I had saved up and held out for a Hero3 camera.
