Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I should begin this by saying that I was very ambivalent about 'Swamplandia' her breakout novel. I found the writing very compelling but the story and the characters didn't quite connect with me. Still, when this was available for review I was very intrigued to read Ms. Russell in a short story format. I will say that I have found the same problem. The writing in these stories is excellent, Russell is an exceptionally stylistic prose artist. But I once again found the plots and characters in the stories a little too off mark, or not engaging. I guess I would conclude by saying that I think I admire Russell's writing much more than I enjoy it. However, if you liked 'Swamplandia' I think you'll find this an excellent collection of stories, if you had issues with it I imagine you won't find anything different here.

Jan Priddy says:
I enjoyed her first collection, Saint Lucy's Home for Girls Raised by Wolves (hardcover), very much, though I cared for some stories, such as the title story, far more than others. Indeed that title story alone was worth the price of the collection. Thus, even though I hadn't liked the swampy stories from her collection, I bought the hardcover of her novel. I didn't enjoy Swamplandia, and for the reasons you state. It was an enormous disappointment and I was sorry to have bought it. I think she is a great talent, but has a ways to go.

Thank you for your review, which helped me avoid a purchase I would have regretted.

Very helpful review. Based on the samples I have read, I think I would concur even if I read the entire book. It's nice to read writers who write well, but I'd rather read good stories and good characters. Thanks for the helpful review.
