You need a WEI of 5 to run it! (Plus, the technical specs that are missing...),
This review is from: Halo 2 - PC (Video Game)
Until a really stable and easy to install patch comes out, this will only work with Vista, and a really good video card. (I'm sure that sometime this year we will see a true patch that will allow you to use it on XP, but then...)
According to the cover box and Microsoft website, your video card must be "NVIDIA 6100, ATI X700 or above." That leaves a lot to interpretation, and nowhere does it state the minimum technical specs required to run the game. So, here it is:
Video memory: 128 Megabytes or higher required
Supported pixel shader version: 2 or higher required
Supported vertex shader version: 2 or higher required
Copied from the game install warning screen:
"Halo 2 for Windows Vista is designed for computers running Microsoft Windows Vista with an overall Windows Experience Index of 5 or higher." Hmmmm, one would think that the requirement of a 5-rating would be in bold type somewhere on the box, especially since the majority of the mass-market computers sold off the shelf are well below 5.
I have the minimum requirements for the video card and 2Gig of RAM (in my Gateway MX6453 laptop)and it runs HORRIBLY, and, at times, not at all.
Make sure you have a really good video card, or else you will suffer.

Good review--especially since a WEI of 5 is "recommended" but not required. I have a WEI of 5.7 with a quad-core processor, nVidia 8x00 SLI, and 4GB of RAM on a RAID 0 array...and even with every non-critical process killed, Halo 2 chugs on anything above Medium detail.
I suspect that, like Halo 1, this game will get really smooth only when hardware gets to another plateau: Halo 1 didn't require a 256MB video card, but that was really the only point where it started running good for me...

I checked on System Requirements Lab if my laptop can run it. I tear apart the minimum and recommended specs, but it says I failed because I have 7. lol.
ATI Radeon 3100, 256MB (shared up to 1.4GB), shader v4.0
AMD Turion(tm) X2 Dual-Core Mobile RM-72: 2.10GHz

Well, it runs fine on my laptop with a WEI of 4.1, but that's only 0.9 away. I run on medium settings at I think 1024x800 (or something like that) with no antialiasing. Hey, it still already looks better than the Xbox version! :)

This isn't very accurate. My computer running Windows 7 has a WEI score of 4.8 and I max the game on 1280x1024 (my left monitor's resolution). My CPU is a 5-year old Pentium D at 3GHz and my graphics card is an ATI Radeon HD5670 with 512MB VRAM. My system RAM is 3GB.

As long as it's above WinXP, it'll run flawlessly. Heck, it'll run even better than it would've on Vista. Windows 7 uses less memory, so everything runs better.

Look, I managed to get it to run on my crappy vista pc with 3gb of ram, 1.5 useable, 1gb dedicated gpu, non hd screen, 2.0ghz intel dual logical core
3gb ram or more
1gb dictated gpu
2.0ghz or faster core
FYI, pixel shader is the hardware itself, meaning you'll have to rip out the gpu and switch it with a newer one to get an upgraded pixel shader
