4.0 out of 5 stars A flawed yet underrated sequel, May 15, 2011
By
This review is from: Alien 3 [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
I'm one of the few that actually enjoys Alien 3. It's not a perfect film by any means, but being a huge fan of the series, I will definitely say that it is pretty underrated. One of the things that annoys me, and the thing that is probably the films biggest flaw is that mysterious egg at the beginning.

Other than that, it's a solid sequel from first time director David Fincher. The film does get pretty slow near the end but if you've seen the documentary done for the film, you already know it went through development hell, so those certain things are easier to overlook.

As far as PQ for the Blu-ray, it's fantastic. The film has never looked better, and probably never will. There are some shots though that look a bit smudgy or less detailed but I would say 90% of it is very well detailed.

Oh, and be sure to watch the Assembly Cut of Alien 3 if you haven't already. It's my preferred cut and is much more closer to Fincher's original vision.

I agree the cut is a million times better, the movie is way better with the new added scenes.

Yes, the alternate cut is great and could be extremely helpful for viewers due to a certain characters disappearance in the theatrical.

That mysterious egg isn't very mysterious. Its the egg that one of the 2 facehuggers emerged from. Either the one that impregnated Ripley, or rode down in the EEV to the planet. Great movie in my opinion. Alien Res was terrible, they should have ended it with #3

(SPOILERS ARE PRESENT)

That alien egg you're talking about is no mystery. In ALIENS, towards the end of the movie, the Queen is on board of USS SULACO, the ship that Ripley, Bishop, Newt and Hicks went back to after their ordeal on Acheron (AKA colony on LV 426 named "Hadley's Hope"). During that time it is quite possible that the Queen laid ONE egg somewhere on the ship. But it was one of those "queen" eggs, the facehugger that emerges from that one is basically on steroids. It is capable of impregnating multiple hosts, up to three or so. Also it has the ability to impregnate a host with a queen embryo, but it has to choose the best possible host for the job, in this case it chose Ripley. Hicks was all messed up, Bishop was not a human and Newt was too small to carry a Queen inside. That is the reason why Ripley went for such a long time without being "bursted", because Queen embryo takes a lot longer to gestate. These "SUPER" facehuggers are basically the last draw of a xenomorph Queen to propagate the species in very dire and "desperate" survival situations. Anyway, once the pod lands on Fiorina "Fury" 161 C prison unit, the facehugger is still alive and impregnates the Dog or in the assembly cut, an oxen. Then it dies, because it ran out of embryos to implant. Hope this helps.
P.S. - I also enjoy Alien 3 very much, especially the Director's Cut. If you ever read an Alien 3 sci-fi novel, it is word for word as the assembly cut. I read the novel before I saw the DC of Alien 3 and was pleasantly surprised because of that fact.

Does the blu-ray edition include the director's cut or assembly cut? Idiotic product info does not say a word about contents of the disc.

Thanks for the info. I was going to skip this blu-ray, being a fan only of Alien and Aliens, but now I'll give it another chance! (Btw, no amount of tinkering would compel me to watch 4 ever again--lol).

I'm a big xenomorph fan myself, so for me alien resurrection is an alright movie. I have all 4 of them on blu ray.
