A Rare Gem of Sufi Psychology,
This review is from: The Sacred Knowledge of the Higher Functions of the Mind: The Altaf al-Quds of Shah Waliullah (Hardcover)
This 18th century presentation of esoteric knowledge is straightforward and highly readable. The distinction and interaction between heart and intellect are explained in the context of the concept that the soul has several parts (an idea expressed in the Kabbalah and other forms of mysticism).
Students of comparative religion will be interested in the author's Muslim version of the theological basis of the Christian trinity, while those who are fascinated with personality typology will learn from his remark that the point of weakness or "flaw" is the same quality that enables one to complete the journey. And it is a return journey: the path to unity with the Divine ("absolute selfhood") is followed by re-immersion in the world ("individual selfhood").
