If you're a student of the Arabic language, Rim Banna is an excellent tool to practice your listening and understanding skills. Unlike much of modern Arabic music, Rim sings in Standard Arabic and sings rather slowly. Her voice can be gentle but still conveys feelings of joy, pain, longing and even occasional humor.
Being Palestinian, there are certain themes in her songs that revolve around the plight of her people. However, I feel that these songs are rather universal in its expression of dismay over war and don't necessarily have the point of blaming enemies or raising animosity.
Rim's musical style is a fusion of traditional Arab instruments with a modern instruments. It's not necessary pop music but instead has a nice, earthy feel. Having lived in the Middle East for a few years, this ISN'T the type of music you will find in taxis or buses or enjoyed by people but it is a nice refreshing change.
Whether or not you understand the language or the lyrics, I highly recommend at least a listen as Rim opens up a view to the Middle East that isn't always apparent. Her music is sweet, lyrical and so meaningful. Aside from her voice and her words, the music itself is just simply superb.
