Fine product until it turns into a brick.,
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sling Media Slingbox SOLO (SB260-100) (Old Model) (Personal Computers)
My unit worked well for eighteen months. When I attempted to reinstall it in a different system the setup software required that I upgrade the firmware. The upgrade failed and the box has been useless ever since.
I am not the only person to have this problem. Slingbox charges $29.95 to talk to you after their warranty period. This will be refunded if they determine you have faulty hardware. Thus it will cost you $29.95 to find out if Slingbox will repair the hardware that their own software rendered useless.
In addition, while the Mac or PC players are free, the mobile players cost $29.95 for EACH type. Want to watch your Slingbox on an iPad? Then pay up even if you have already purchased a player for your iPhone.
These guys richly deserve to go out of business. I suggest you consider a Monsoon Vulkano. These units perform exactly the same function (and more) as a Slingbox, cost much less, and do not have a history of becoming unusable. Further the player software for any platform you desire is FREE and so is their customer service.
Given the problems with these units and the available alternatives there is simply no reason to purchase one.

Thank you for mentioning the Vulkano, with all these issues and the fact I'd have to pay an additional $30 just to watch it on my Evo (which is the main reason I'd even consider this), it's good to know someone else is in the market. I only wish Amazon sold the Vulkano Platinum, but it looks like I have to get it directly from them. Thanks again!!

Monsoon is worse than SlingMedia... They promised a Mac OS X player for their Hava devices back when they were still new. They even included it on their boxes, "Mac Player Coming Soon!". Guess what, they never released it. Renamed their new devices Vulkano and released a Mac app that doesn't support their older devices.

Alexander, Thanks for your reply. Looks like I'll have to do more research before I purchase a unit.

Had one exchange with Monsoon, trying to buy a Vulkano as a gift, and had the nastiest discussion I've ever had with a vendor AND I WAS TRYING TO BUY THE DAMN THING. As it was (and remains) a top of the list birthday item, I ordered it through amazon -- and have been waiting a month for some clue as to when it will be back in stock. Amazon has kindly offered to cancel the order. I'll hang in for a few more weeks....but. Anyone know of an alternative?

I have had one of these for several years, it worked OK until suddenly the remote would load but no buttons responded to anything. Apparently this emerged after some kind of system upgrade, anyway it is now worthless though semi-functional in that the channel it is manually tuned to will show up on the remote computer but of course....if you want to watch any other channels, SOL. I'm pissed.
