This review is from: Fifty Shades of Grey: Book One of the Fifty Shades Trilogy (Fifty Shades of Grey Series) (Paperback)
I decided to order this book after hearing all of the great reviews about it. It is an understatement to say that this book is pornographic. The main characters have graphic sex in practically every chapter. It is definitely for mature audiences only, but I digress. My main problem with the book is not the graphic sex...I knew it would be pornographic from the reviews.

What disgusts me about this book is the two main characters. Mr. Grey is unbelievably controlling and demanding (and I'm not referring to the sex scenes). He is psychologically, and even a little physically, abusive. A character of this nature is not foreign to literature, but it disturbs me that E.L. James tries to paint him as a charming, mysterious, romantic character. There is nothing romantic or charming about abuse. He practically brainwashes Ana into being his sex slave. James has written the character of Ana to be so irritatingly naive that she accepts the way Mr. Grey treats her and even considers it "hot".

Every page I read made me angrier and more nauseous. This book is completely terrible. I would venture to guess that E.L. James has a disturbing past of her own. Otherwise, I don't see how she could have written such filth about an abusive relationship and market it as an "erotic romance".

I bought the entire trilogy at once, but I have no intention of reading books 2 and 3. Book 1 was torture enough. This book was a waste of time and paper. In a time when young women's self-esteem is at an all-time low, this book does nothing but try to convince young girls that they can make a man happy by surrendering complete control of themselves and catering to his every whim.

I implore you to not buy this book.
