Worthwhile upgrade to my HG20,
This review is from: Canon VIXIA HF G10 Full HD Camcorder with HD CMOS Pro and 32GB Internal Flash Memory (Electronics)
I've had the camera for a couple of weeks and now have a weekend of shooting under my belt. I bought it in addition to an HG20 that I've had since Summer 2009. The camera looks great and is solidly built, although the HG20 feels slightly sturdier to me. In general, the camera is significantly more sophisticated than the HG20, with a lot of features that had me consulting the manual (although most aren't necessary for
every day, family-oriented filming).
The low light performance is a standout in terms of a significant improvement. You'll find clips shot indoors without special lighting are much improved (truer color, less grainy). I'm still getting used to the touch screen menus, which are a bit difficult to use sometimes and, unfortunately, cause you to smudge the LCD. Speaking of the LCD, it is a huge improvement being much larger, sharper and more vibrant than the HG20's (and with a backlighting option). I find the clarity of outside daylight shots exceptional; same assessment though for the HG20. Could be my imagination, but I find that blue skies are more vibrant.
My favorite unexpected feature is the custom button/wheel, which I use to easily adjust exposure compensation. Overall, I'm thrilled with the camera although wouldn't have minded sticking with the joystick menu system. I haven't spent much time on stills as, based on the design of the camera, I have very low expectations of them. I'm more than happy to trade suboptimal stills for much improved low light performance.
Would add that I'm a Canon guy. I've always used their stuff and been happy. That having been said, if you're not a prosumer (just do typical family stuff) but still want a top of the line camcorder, the Panasonic HDC-TM900K is a hell of a camera at an amazing price (probably a better value for that profile than the HF G10, which I consider the best prosumer camcorder on the market).
