Therapy for Writers,
This review is from: The Plot Whisperer: Secrets of Story Structure Any Writer Can Master (Paperback)
I started my novel in 1996 and got mired down in the middle. I was afraid of stepping out, using my imagination, and standing up for my story. I realize now I sort of believed there was A Way to write a novel and that I must get it right. Because I didn't know quite how to get it right, I assumed something must be wrong with me and I have no business writing.
Here we are in 2011, and I continue to yearn to write. I stumbled on Martha's series on YouTube about plotting, and eventually found this book the Plot Whisperer. I have made huge breakthroughs in my writing, not only because of the plot tools Martha explains but also because she so clearly identifies and understands the emotional blocks that face so many writers. I believe Martha is right when she advises that the writer must go through a transformation before she can bring her protagonist through one. I am not a bad writer or a stupid writer - I just need to look at myself and deal with my demons/quirks/fears before I can take my story forward.
One thing I also found useful is Martha's view on right brain vs. left brain writers. It's so helpful to understand why I struggle with some aspects of story telling but breeze through others. Martha has helped me see that I am a mix of right brain vs left brain [a mix, not a balance] and has helped me identify what I can expect to struggle with and what I can expect to find relatively easy. I don't find myself questioning whether I should be writing in the first place; I find myself thinking "Okay, well of course this is difficult for me. As Martha says, I need to embrace this challenge rather than run from it, and my protagonist and I will both be stronger in the end."
Writers with self-doubts should find this book very helpful and insightful for dealing with their fears. All writers should find this book very helpful for dealing with mechanics of plot and the beauty of the Universal Story.
