Crossing A Memoir,
This review is from: Crossing: A Memoir (Hardcover)
Dr. McCloskey is a successful economic professor at the heigth of his career as Donald. So why would someone want to change his sex? This book addresses this issue and much more. Family relationships, the lack of knowledge that many psychiarists have regard to tansgender issues, and the special relationships that Deirdre forms with women are some of the many themes that run throughout this book.
"Crossing A Memoir" also has its suspense elements. One of Deirdre family members worked very hard to have her committed to a mental institution. A reader really has to respect the cool way that Deirdre's handled this difficult situation. Unlike criminal cases, where a defendent is protected by Constitutional guarantees, it is often easier to commit someone to a mental institution than it is to be convicted of a felony.
Hopefully society will better undersand the many issues that this book raises but until then "Crossing A Memoir" is a must read.
