This review is from: Forward Progress: Confessions from a Rookie College Football Official (Paperback)
Through his book and webpage, Todd Skaggs has done what no other has even tried before: Provided the map towards forward progress as an official. Sure, some parts can be obtained elsewhere, but the information is not handy. And there sure isn't a website that lists all conferences, all levels, and all coordinators of officials. For any new official this book should prove to be a valuable resource, a method to the madness that informs and instructs. While the information within the book is not as extensive as on the website - obvious medium differences create that disparity - there are still nuggets of truth and wisdom for more senior officials who have aspirations to make it to college games and beyond.
Perhaps my favorite part of the book is each Zebra Tales section, where a more prominent official relives a story or game that taught a lesson, provided laughs, or both. Loving the game and time with other officials is certainly mandatory for someone wishing to truly improve and advance.
Ultimately, it's probable those who have read and reviewed the book who represent some of the 90% seeking relentless improvement, a key quality identified by the author. Knowing that several hundred applications were submitted to the ACC for an individual position one year, however, should be enough to convince even the most wary official to pick up Forward Progress for a short read and hopes of further knowledge/improvement.
