Ready Player 1 with spies,
This review is from: The Double Game (Hardcover)
The Double Game has A LOT of allusions to other (famous and not so famous) spy novels. Other than that, the story is kind of silly.
The book reminds me of Ready Player One (a weak story chock full of 1980s video game references designed to delight a certain demographic). This book was much the same. The constant references to other spy novels was entertaining for a little while, but it soon became apparent that the story was kind of silly. In reading thrillers one has to be willing to live with implausible coincidences and questionable actions by characters, but it was just too much in this book. Nothing the characters did made sense
Even if I were to believe this total amateur who has read a lot of spy novels would have been able to follow the trail and find the right contacts, why would seasoned espionage veterans have opened up to him so completely? Oh and the big payoff at the end was a complete dud. Maybe it is like Ready Player One in that the book really only appeals to die hard fans of cold war spy novels. I enjoy those books, but evidently I am not enough of a fan to find The Double Game enjoyable. In my opionion you'd be better off reading one of the classic spy novels referenced in The Double Game rather than the book itself.
